Vice President Palin Wouldn't Be Able to Effect Much at All

The first Vice President of the United States, John Adams, described the office of Vice President as "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived."

If Governor Sarah Palin were elected to the office of Vice President, she would have precious little influence on policy making. She would not be able to have a significant impact on abortion law, economics, or much of anything else. According to the Constitution of the United States, "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided" (Article I, Section 3). Since 1789, the vice president has cast 242 tie-breaking votes. The first vice president, John Adams (pictured), still holds the record, having broken a tie in the Senate 29 times during his two terms in office. Our current vice president, Richard Cheney, has cast seven tie-breaking votes.

Thus, those willing to ignore the biblical instructions against choosing women for the office of civil magistrate would be "wasting their vote" on a candidate who could have little impact in promoting conservative, pro-life policy.

As morbid and insensitive as it sounds, I think a lot of her fervent supporters are...essentially voting on the hope and prayer that John McCain passes away, which I think is...awful to think about even though I don't agree with him politically.

I value the role of families and women so much more because of your posts, thank you for being inspirational!

Nathanial,

You’re exactly right! In a blog post this morning I also pointed out that Mrs. Palin will not be appointing Supreme Court Justices. She will not be signing legislation nor will she have veto power. Also as you pointed out given the prospect that the Democrats may be gaining seats in the Senate, we are less likely to see her as a tie breaker. She will have the authority to cut ribbons, meet the press, and perhaps she will have the authority to turn the presidential chair in the U.S. Senate into a rocking chair. If she had a rocker then once the “Christian Right” finds out that the smooth talking John McCain is a real liberal after all, she can gently rock them all back to sleep.

Great posts the last couple of days on this topic, Nathaniel...
Thanks for keeping the standard high and always pointing back to "What sayeth the Scriptures?"

Excellent post, Nathaniel. Palin supporters must hear that quote from John Adams! They somehow seem to think that her "conservatism" will balance out the liberal/socialist views of McCain. They are sadly mistaken.

Jessica,

I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

Praise God that you have been encouraged and inspired by these posts. I certainly cannot take credit for it, but I praise God that you have received some edification. Thank you for setting an example as a discerning young lady.

Vaughnshire family,

You are right! The Scriptures must be our standard, and I have yet to see anyone present to me a biblical argument for why a woman would be qualified for civil office. It can't be done.

Blessings to y'all!

Scott,

You said it well, my friend. It is a mistake to think voting for McCain-Palin will do any good for the Pro-Life cause.
